's in addition to 69 people killed in the caribbean before hurricane sandy moved north. drivers in parts of new york and new jersey waited in long lines again today for gas. in someplacing, you see, lines stretch for three to four miles. some stations ran out of gas, while dozening of drivers were waiting. authorities say more than half of all gasoline stations in the new york and new jersey area are shut down, due to power outages or storm damage. >>> sunday's new york city mayor none was canceled today. new york city mayor michael bloomberg made the announcement just hours after he promised the race would go on despite the damage. estimated 40,000 runners from around the world had been expected to take part in that marathon. the race had been scheduled to start in staten island, which is one of the hardest hit areas from this week's storm. >>> and in 7 minutes, staten island residents say they have been left behind in relief efforts, and we asked california senator barbara boxer about what's being done, and if help is getting to those that need it. >>> four days before the election, new unemp

of the aftermath. right now we're in the aftermath period in terms of sandy. tell me how you feel about that. and before we get to rebuilding, people taking care of continuing damage right now, how do you assess the coordination between the state, federal, and local municipalities? >> i think we're doing very well. i think the president's response has been terrific, really. it's been coordinated unlike some of what happened in katrina. and you heard governor christie, who is a republican with president obama working together, and that's how it's been from the president, to the governor, to the counties and the towns. one of the things that i did today was talk to fema about trying to get an office and staff person in various parts of the district today, and they're working on it, and with the money that comes to downs for recovery to rebuild board walks or municipal buildings, i think there is a 25% state and local match. so we ask that that be waived. many of the towns are small and can't afford that. so there's a lot of cooperation going on. >> when you're making those calls, someone is an

district and throughout my state in the aftermath of hurricane sandy was nothing less than catastrophic. mr. pallone: but i really want to talk about the rebuilding effort today and what we need to do over the long term. the amount of outpouring, if you will, from volunteers, from just regular people in the district was just overwhelming. and i want to thank fema. i want to thank the red cross, the salvation army, all the different groups that are out there and continue to be out there today helping out with in effort. but the outpouring of volunteers from our own district and from new jersey was gist incredible. -- was just incredible. a few days ago i remember going to union beach, which was one of the towns hardest hit, and seeing so many people bringing food and clothing and cleaning supplies and one guy owns a pizza place, brought in a pizza oven and was making pizzas. another guy brought in a tv so people could watch tv at the center. where people come to sign up for fema. it just was amazing and it showed the spirit, if you will, of the people that they were willing to do that. but t
